Amelanchier (Rosacea)

Amelanchier utahensis var. utahensis

Difficult to key this out from Amelanchier alnifolia var. alnifolia. You could go by the leaf hair (but that is inconsistant). Or you could use leaf size (but microhabitat seems to effect the size more than the species). Or you could use the petal length (but you may as well flip a coin). Habitat is probably reliable if you jump from desert (A. utahensis var. utahensis) to aspen (A. alnifolia var. alnifolia) but the serviceberry in between those habitats could be either species. The number of styles seems to be generally reliable - usually two to four for Utah serviceberry, and usually five (maybe four) in Saskatoon serviceberry.
